The Wasatch Children's Stuttering Management Program, the nonprofit branch of our business, is the heart of what we do at Wasatch Speech and Language Center. For 15 years, this program has been dedicated to providing participants with valuable techniques to manage their stuttering and develop social skills. Our stuttering summer camp is specifically designed for children aged 11-15. Our experienced speech-language pathologists use evidence-based practices to develop effective communication strategies, increase self-awareness, and build self-esteem. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and our program is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in their lives.

I consider the people in the Mountain West to be extremely fortunate in having one of the most experienced and effective speech pathologists in the nation available to those of us who stutter.  I firmly believe that any person who stutters can quickly be taught, under the direction of Mr. Gurrister, how to be reasonably fluent.

I would refer any of my friends to the Wasatch Speech and Language Center.  We have been able to help my son's stutter virtually disappear.  Tom is great with kids, and has a way of making everyone feel comfortable. T Tom has taught us as parents how we can continue treatment at home, and helps us understand how and why we use specific approaches.  Thanks.

Tom worked with two of my children who exhibited symptoms of stuttering and now the speak perfectly fluently.  He is very personable and made my children feel comfortable working with him.  Maria is also a very well regarded therapist and helped another child work on his 's' sound.  We would definitely recommend anyone to Wasatch Speech and Language Center.

Our son's stuttering has neurological root causes (causes that were poorly diagnosed and treated by other "specialists").  Tom recognized Hunter's unique requirements and armed him with the tools necessary to manage and even excel in his fluency.  Hunter has learned to accept his stuttering-- a crucial first step in such therapy-- and continues to practice Tom's techniques.  In the process, Tom has also boosted Hunter's confidence in himself.  For that too, we are grateful.

It is with great excitement that I write to you regarding Wasatch Speech and Language and their therapists.  I have two sons who both stutter.  We have been flying to Utah year after year to have our sons attend the intensive summer program for children.  We live in California and have been to many therapists here and have not found such a successful program or therapy here in California as we have found at the Wasatch Speech and Language Center. The benefit that both my sons get from each summer intensive workshop and therapy with Tom Gurrister and Maria Gurrister is simply amazing.  They teach my boys the tools they need to speak and smooth out their stuttering.  My oldest son with the tools he has learned will stand up in front of a middle school classroom and give a speech and has also ran for student council in his school.  My younger son has learning disabilities on top of his stuttering and it is quite a challenge to get him to use his skills, so it is of utmost importance that my sons get to go to the summer program each summer so that they get a refresher and keep their skills that last them through the year until the next summer we attend.  We have been coming for at least the last 6 years to Utah every summer to give my boys the therapy they so desperately need.

Salt Lake City Area Stuttering Camp for Adolescents

Our week-long treatment program functions as an intensive stuttering camp, combining individual and group therapy sessions with interactive community outings. Designed to help participants learn, practice, and transfer real-world skills to manage their stuttering, our stuttering program fosters a supportive and nurturing environment. We understand the profound impact stuttering can have on a child's life, and we provide opportunities for participants to apply their skills in real-life situations, supported by their peers and therapists.

Intensive Stuttering Therapy Program

Our intensive stuttering therapy program is a comprehensive treatment approach addressing each individual's unique needs. Our therapy sessions include evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and stuttering modification strategies. The program is built on the following pillars:
  • Stuttering Management: Using a combination of evidence-based stuttering treatment techniques, participants learn, practice, and transfer their new skills in various functional settings.
  • Personalized Training Plans: Each child is assigned a clinician to provide individual therapy, monitor their progress, assign daily homework, and tailor workshops and outings to their specific speech needs.
  • Highly Social Environment: An incredibly supportive environment that creates a community of stutterers who share their stories, fears, and triumphs, inspiring acceptance and confidence.
  • Parent Empowerment: Provides parents with resources, training, and education to support their child and maintain progress after the program ends.
  • Certified Clinicians: Licensed speech pathologists and graduate students in speech pathology receive valuable training, supervised by ASHA-certified stuttering specialists.
Why It Matters

Why It Matters

Left untreated, stuttering can lead to decreased self-confidence and increased social anxiety. Children often stop raising their hand in class, they don't participate in school activities like running for office or playing sports as much as other children and eventually, they start missing opportunities because of their speech.

Our Holladay, Utah center serves as program headquarters and daily meeting place. We organize community outings, like visits to the zoo, mall, and aquarium, to help participants apply their skills in real-life situations and engage in diverse challenges.

WHAT

Tom realized that many of the struggles that plagued adult stutterers for their entire life could've been avoided, or greatly reduced if they had received appropriate treatment and support in their developing years. Adapted from an adult stuttering program (The SSMP), the pillars of the WCSMP uniquely address every aspect of stuttering so that the child can finally feel confident and in control of their speech.
  • STUTTERING MANAGEMENT: Using a combination of evidence-based stuttering treatment techniques, participants learn, practice, and transfer their new skills in a variety of situations and functional settings.
  • PERSONALIZED TRAINING PLANS: Each child is assigned a clinician to provide individual therapy, monitor their progress throughout the program, provide daily homework assignments, and tailor workshops and outings to the child's specific speech needs.
  • HIGHLY SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT: An incredibly supportive environment that creates a community of stutterers who share in each other's stories, fears, and triumphs. Most importantly, the group finds solidarity in one another and inspires each other to find acceptance and confidence in their stuttering. The esprit de corp is the power of the program.
  • PARENT EMPOWERMENT: Gives parents the resources, training, and education to support their child and maintain their progress well after the program ends.
  • CERTIFIED CLINICIANS:  Licensed speech pathologists as well as graduate students in speech pathology receive valuable training and the program is closely supervised by ASHA-certified stuttering specialists.

Stuttering Therapy FAQs

What age should you start stuttering therapy?
Stuttering therapy can be beneficial for individuals of all ages, but the earlier it is started, the better the chances of success. For children who stutter, it is generally recommended that therapy starts between the ages of 2 and 5. Early intervention can prevent stuttering from becoming a long-term problem and may even lead to complete recovery in some cases.

When do you refer to speech therapy for stuttering?
A referral for speech therapy for stuttering should be made if a person's stuttering is causing them distress, affecting their daily communication, or if the stuttering has lasted for longer than six months. A speech-language pathologist (SLP) can help evaluate the individual's speech and language abilities, assess the severity of the stuttering, and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Can kids outgrow stuttering?
Many children can and do outgrow stuttering without any formal intervention. However, for some children, stuttering may persist and become more severe if left untreated. It is difficult to predict who will outgrow stuttering and who will require treatment. Early intervention, such as speech therapy, can help children overcome stuttering and prevent it from becoming a long-term problem.
