The Wasatch Children's Stuttering Management Program

The Wasatch Children’s Stuttering Management Program has two main objectives:
1. Provide services that assist in the treatment and management of stuttering. This is
conducted in a one week intensive format.
2. Train clinicians to work with stutterers.
Our week-long treatment program is an intensive stuttering camp aimed at helping individuals learn, practice and transfer into the real world skills to manage their stuttering. A typical day of the camp:

Our week-long treatment program is an intensive stuttering camp aimed at helping individuals learn, practice and transfer into the real world skills to manage their stuttering. A typical day of the camp:

The day would start with a large group meeting and introductions, then the daily goals would be addressed for each individual stutterer and the focus for the day. Stuttering management strategies would also be demonstrated during this large group meeting so that stutterers are reminded of the skills they should be using throughout the day.

The large group would then break into smaller groups and individual therapy to practice their skills.

After the morning group therapy sessions, the group would leave for a community outing to places such as the zoo, planetarium, aquarium, etc. The purpose of the community outings is to help stutterers learn to transfer and generalize their
skills to real world situations and practice social skills. This gives them an opportunity to practice their skills in authentic situations similar to what they might encounter in
their daily lives.

The day would end with another large group meeting to “wrap-up” the day, examine and debrief how the day went. Before being sent home for the evening, all participants would be assigned individualized homework to complete with their family overnight and bring back the following morning.
At the completion of the program a long term maintenance plan is provided and a one month “refresher” course or “tune-up” group is scheduled. There is a parent orientation at the beginning of the program and a final wrap on the last day.
